Many people who are covered by a PPO choose not to use their health
insurance to cover their treatment. There are several good reasons
for doing so.
Health insurance companies require that a major mental disorder is diagnosed for each client in order to be reimbursed. This diagnosis becomes a part of your medical record.
Client privacy is compromised by the billing record created by insurance. Having a mental disorder on your health record can have significant negative consequences. In the future, if you want to apply for life, disability or private health insurance, you may be turned down due to the prior diagnosis of a mental disorder.
The diagnosis may also be revealed if you ever get subpoenaed. People have found themselves sued after car accidents or divorce and had their mental disorder diagnosis held against them.
For the above reasons, many people choose not to use their health insurance. If cost is an issue for you, I do occasionally set a lower fee based on financial need. If you believe this applies to you, please contact me at (949) 288-3123 to discuss. If I am not able to help you, I will do my best to find a good referral.
